In this C1 ESL lesson, students practice vocabulary to talk about how the public sees artificial intelligence and why it struggles with its reputation.
Warm-up:
Students read a few facts about how the public views AI and talk about how these facts make them feel about AI.
Video:
Students watch a video titled “AI is now unpopular. That may not make a difference.” After watching the video, they answer a few questions.
Exercises:
The students do five matching exercises in a row: matching terms with definitions or descriptions, connect words to create collocations, match the opposites and lastly match sentence parts to create full sentences. In the following exercise, the learners choose which statements about AI they think are true. In the sixth exercise, they choose the correct alternative(s) to finish a sentence. After that, they label AI descriptions as general or specialized. In the eighth exercise, they complete sentences with the correct forms of words in brackets and in the next one, they complete sentences with phrasal verbs. Lastly, the students match words with pictures.
Reading:
Learners read a short text and then answer the questions.
Discussion:
The students finish sentences with their own words. They also answer a few questions about AI.
