Underwater cables

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – Expand English vocabulary related to technology while exploring topics like global data transmission and information distribution. 
• – Practice and apply advanced language skills through varied “you do” activities; such as  synonym matching, “fill in the blank”, and finding the mistakes.
• – Utilize a video called, “The Hidden Battle for Fiber-Optic Supremacy” to further develop discussion skills in English.

Warm-up

Students start the lesson with a “guess the word” activity connected to vocabulary needed for the lesson’s topic. 

Video

Students will watch a video called “The Hidden Battle for Fiber-Optic Supremacy.” After the video, the students will be asked to complete a “fill in the blank” comprehension activity.

Exercises

In this “you do” part of the lesson, students will apply English language practice through technology-related vocabulary, matching synonyms, “fill in the blank”, and identifying mistakes in sentences.  

Reading

The students will read a short security memo.  As a reading comprehension follow-up, students will discuss their opinion about the author’s point of view.

Wrap Up

To finish the lesson, students will complete a final “you do” activity based on a word cloud about global data transmission.
