In this ESL lesson, the student will get familiar with traditional clothes of different nations while revising the use of since and for.
Warm-up discussion
The student describes their personal style and explains how important fashion is to them.
Vocabulary: clothing materials and traditional clothes
Through a matching exercise, the student gets familiarized with different textiles, which are then used to describe different traditional clothing items (kilt, sari, kimono, poncho).
After that, the student matches the names of items with their descriptions and describes traditional clothing of their own culture.
Grammar: since and for
After the rules of use are explained, the student decides whether time phrases such as a century, ages, or 12pm should be used with since or for. The student then reads a text which they need to complete using since and for.
The student practices the grammar unit further by completing fun facts about traditional fashion around the world (e.g. ushanka, parka, straw hat, and shuka).
Video: Traditional African fashion
Through a short video lecture of a clothes designer, the student learns about traditional African fashion and its aesthetics, and discusses questions related to the video. Then, the student fills in the gaps using the words mentioned in the video.
Discussion
The student finds a few clothing items in their closet that they can’t name in English and tries to describe them to the teacher.
