Submarines

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – expand vocabulary related to submarines through definition matching, sentence completion exercises, dialogue gap-filling with suggested words, and verb insertion activities;
• – improve comprehension skills by watching a video about how submarines dive and surface, reading a text about submarine technology, and answering targeted questions about both materials;
• – develop analytical thinking and speaking abilities through picture-based storytelling, comprehension discussions, and exploring famous quotes related to underwater exploration.

In this C2 lesson plan, students will practice vocabulary related to submarines.

Warm-up 

The lesson begins with students sharing what they think happened based on the picture they see.

Video 

Students will view a video titled “How Do Submarines Dive and Surface?” After watching the video, they will answer questions to check for comprehension.

Exercises 

Students will learn new vocabulary by matching terms with their definitions. 

In the second exercise, the students will be asked to choose which word completes the sentence correctly. They will also fill gaps in a dialogue by creating sentences using suggested words. The last exercise will require them to fill the gaps in a text with missing verbs.

Reading 

In this part, the students will read a short text about submarines. After that, they will answer questions about the text.

Discussion 

The lesson concludes with a discussion around a famous quote.
