This lesson explores government surveillance of citizens through vocabulary exercises and discussion activities that examine both security benefits and privacy concerns.
Opening discussion:
The students discuss questions related to city cameras.
Video:
The students watch a video “Smile, you’re on camera: Facial recognition becomes widespread in London“ and then mark the statements based on the video as true or false.
Exercises:
The students match each surveillance method with its primary purpose. In the second exercise, they put words into sentences in which they belong. In the third exercise, the students read two opinions and share with which one they agree more and why. After that, they identify parts of sentences that are used to express an opinion. In the next exercise, the students are given six topics on which they are asked to express an opinion. Finally, the learners look for mistakes in sentences.
Discussion:
In this part of the lesson the students complete sentences with their own ideas.
