In this C2 lesson, students will review language related to changes in industry and lifestyle. They will learn how to use emphasizers to stress, amplify and intensify an idea or a statement, and reduce the importance of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Introduction
First, the student reads a paragraph paying special attention to emphasizers (incredibly, extremely, naturally, simply, tremendously, merely).
Emphasizers
The student is introduced to different types of emphasizers: to stress an idea (clearly, undoubtedly, obviously), to maximize, amplify, and intensify (extremely, absolutely, tremendously) and downtoners (barely, merely, scarcely).
Then, the student practices the use of these emphasizers by filling in the gaps and circling the correct emphasizers.
Video: Future of manufacturing
After watching a short video about advanced manufacturing technologies, the student completes a listening comprehension exercise based on the video. New words are extracted from the video for the student to match them with the correct synonyms (upscale, nimbleness, value chain, leverage).
Vocabulary: improving industry
The student puts the strategies into the correct category for future industrial improvement – Manufacturing, Information Technology, Agriculture, and Entertainment.
Finally, the student reads and comments on a technology-related quote.
