SMART goals

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are for students to:

• – understand the SMART framework for setting effective goals by completing vocabulary, listening, and reading activities;

• – discuss personal and professional objectives at an intermediate level;

• – identify key points in a video called “A Complete Guide to Goal Setting”.

In this Intermediate ESL lesson plan, students learn about setting effective goals by using the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), before  discussing their personal and professional objectives.

Warm-up: 

Students discuss famous businessmen to elicit vocabulary relevant to the topic.

Video: 

Students identify key information in a video titled “A Complete Guide to Goal Setting.” 

Exercises: 

First, students put a goal creation timeline in order. 

In the second exercise, they match useful vocabulary with the correct definitions.

Reading: 

Students read a short text about setting goals, and then answer comprehension questions to check their understanding.

Discussion: 

Students practice expressing their thoughts in English by discussing some thought-provoking questions related to goals and objectives.
