Lesson overview

In this upper-intermediate ESL lesson, students practice new vocabulary related to critical thinking and media literacy. They also learn to use modal verbs of deduction.

 

Warm-up:

Students read about a few situations. They decide what they would do in each one, and why.

 

Grammar:

Introduction to modal verbs of deduction.

 

Exercises:

The students fill in the gaps in sentences with must, might, or can’t. After that, they choose the correct option to complete a number of sentences. In the last section, the learners match the terms to their definitions.

 

Reading:

Learners read a short text and answer questions about it.

 

Discussion:

The students discuss a number of habits and how much each one protects or weakens critical thinking.
