This Intermediate lesson plan integrates multiple language activities that develop students’ vocabulary related to effective communication.
Warm-up
We’ll start with an engaging activity where students go through a brief dialogue and find expressions that describe active listening.
Video
A viewing of a video “4 things all great listeners know” will serve as a conversation starter. Post-viewing students are asked to pick which points were mentioned by the speaker. This helps students practice their listening for specific information while reinforcing the importance of active listening strategies in real-world communication.
Exercises
Students will have the chance to practice their new knowledge through interactive tasks, including categorizing sentences, sorting listening expressions and identifying the outlier. These activities reinforce vocabulary acquisition and help students recognize nuanced differences between active and passive listening behaviors, challenging them to think critically about communication styles.
Reading
A reading exercise involves a short text about how to listen well, followed by a few questions about the text.
Discussion
The lesson concludes with an exercise where students personalize sentences to reflect their own perspectives. This productive activity allows students to apply the vocabulary and concepts they’ve learned throughout the lesson while sharing personal experiences, making the language more meaningful and memorable for them.
