Double negatives

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – Master double negatives by learning formation rules and when they’re acceptable through grammar activities and sentence correction exercises in this advanced ESL lesson.
• – Build comprehension and recognition skills by watching a TEDx talk about double negative usage and answering questions about their background and meaning.
• – Improve grammar accuracy by practicing when double negatives create positive meanings and recognizing correct versus incorrect usage in various contexts.

In this Advanced ESL lesson, the student will learn about double negatives along with how they are formed. The student will have several grammar activities related to the topic and after the student will be able to look at the different rules relating to double negatives.

Warm-up

The student chooses the negative sentence that sounds correct.

Grammar

The lesson consists of numerous grammar activities for the students to complete to comprehend how and when to use double negatives.

Video: The grammar of double negatives

The student watches a video of a TEDx Talk in which a university professor explains the background and usage of double negatives. They answer the questions based on the video and correct the mistakes in sentences using double negative. They also practice recognizing double negatives.
They also learn when it’s okay to use double negatives and when double negatives have a positive meaning.
