Christopher Columbus

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – Analyze and discuss Christopher Columbus’s positive and negative impact on history.
• – Practice and apply advanced English language skills through activities like vocabulary matching. “Fill in the blank”, and reading comprehension.
• – Utilize a video called “History vs.Christopher Columbus” and a reading passage about his impact; to practice reading comprehension, analytical, and discussion skills in English.

Warm-up

Students will start with a “fill in the blank” activity related to vocabulary surrounding the topic of Christopher Columbus.

Video

Students will watch a video called,“History vs.Christopher Columbus”. Afterwards, students will complete a comprehension activity through a “we do” series of questions. 

Exercises

In this “you do” part of the lesson, students will continue to apply and practice their skills with English vocabulary about Christopher Columbus’s life and controversies through activities like vocabulary matching.

Reading

Students will read a passage about Christopher Columbus’s accomplishments and controversies.  Afterwards, they will complete a comprehension activity by answering questions about the text.

Wrap Up

In the final practice activity for the English lesson, students will have a discussion with their teacher, using the prompts provided about Christopher Columbus and his potential long-term impact.
