Why many people can’t afford a house anymore

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – broaden vocabulary on the theme of housing and explore housing affordability concepts through various interactive activities;
• – practice discussion skills, categorization activities, reading comprehension, and creative writing abilities through housing-focused content;
• – watch a video about Vancouver’s housing affordability crisis and create short stories about house purchases using economic terminology.

This lesson plan is tailored for students at the Advanced level and aimed at broadening their vocabulary on the theme of housing.

Warm-up
The session kicks off with a choice activity where students pick an article on housing affordability they’d be interested in reading and discuss their reasons.

Video
Participants will watch a video named “Vancouver is in a “full-blown crisis” for housing affordability.” Post-viewing, students pick which topics were mentioned in the video.

Exercises
In this part of the lesson, students discuss whether they would be willing to buy a number of homes at their listed prices. In the second exercise, they group adjectives that impact house prices into the correct categories.

Reading
Students will read a piece discussing house affordability, followed by a Q&A session.

Discussion
To wrap up, students will create a short story about a house purchase using words from a word cloud.
