Lesson overview

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

  • – Discover unusual hobby vocabulary including terms like “helium,” “biodegradable,” and “serenity” while exploring extreme activities through balloon flying videos and hot air balloon articles.
  • – Practice graded quantifiers such as “much,” “most,” “many,” “more of,” and “more” through sentence exercises and learning correct usage patterns in this advanced lesson.
  • – Engage in hobby discussions by watching videos about unconventional pastimes, reading about aerial adventures, and sharing personal interests while applying new vocabulary and grammar structures.

In this Advanced ESL lesson, students will learn about unusual hobbies.  They will also learn how to use graded quantifiers (much, most, many, more of and more) correctly.

Warm-up

The lesson starts with a discussion about hobbies.

Video: How one man flies hundreds of miles using balloons

Before watching the video, the student is introduced to new vocabulary through a matching exercise (helium, biodegradable, serenity, etc.). They will practice using new words and matching some of them with the correct pictures. After watching the video How one man flies using balloons, they will discuss questions based on it.

Reading: A short text about hot air balloons

The student reads a short article about flying in a hot air balloon and answers questions about the text to show understanding of it.

Grammar: Graded Quantifiers and Descriptive Language

The student learns different ways to use quantifiers and how to use them correctly (much, most, many, more of and more). They will practice using quantifiers in sentences.

Review

The student practices vocabulary and grammar by completing sentences and answering wrap-up questions.
