True grit

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – focus on the concept of true grit and perseverance through analysis of persistence scenarios and obstacle-facing strategies;
• – practice error correction, word completion, reading comprehension, phrase identification, and discussion skills through perseverance-focused exercises;
• – watch a video about the strongest predictor for success and analyze expressions of determination through various language activities.

In this B2 level lesson plan, students focus on the concept of true grit and perseverance through various exercises.

Warm-up 

Students analyze two scenarios and discuss how they demonstrate persistence in the face of obstacles.

Video 

Students watch an informative video titled “The strongest predictor for success.” After viewing, they complete a matching exercise connecting sentence beginnings with appropriate endings based on the video content.

Exercises 

Language skills are reinforced through various activities. Students find and correct mistakes in sentences. In the second exercise, they complete words by filling in the missing letters to create expressions of perseverance and determination. Lastly, they find the phrases in the text that correspond to each of the given definitions.

Reading 

Students read a text about grit and answer questions to test reading comprehension.

Discussion 

Students answer thought provoking questions on the subject matter.
