The middle income trap

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – Practice vocabulary and conversation skills related to economics and statistical analysis.
• – Develop better English language skills through matching, word selection, and “fill in the blank” activities.
• – Utilize a video called “What is the Middle Income Trap?” to engage in discussion practice about economic challenges.

Warm-up 

The lesson begins with a reading comprehension activity to introduce the “middle income trap” concept to students.

Video 

Students will watch the video “What is the Middle Income Trap?” After watching the video, they will answer questions to practice and apply comprehension skills in English.

Exercises 

Students will learn new vocabulary about Economics by matching terms with their definitions and choosing appropriate words to fill in sentences about the “middle income trap”.

Reading 

In this “you do” activity, students will complete a reading passage about the middle income trap. After, they will answer questions to further develop and practice comprehension skills in English. 

Wrap Up

The lesson ends with a “fill in the blank” activity where students apply missing verbs to form a text about the “middle income trap”.  Students will also practice discussion skills by sharing their opinions about “the middle income trap” .
