The history of ice cream

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – broaden vocabulary related to indulging in small pleasures;

• – improve grammar skills by practicing however, although, and despite/in spite of;

• – watch a video about “How Did Ancient Civilizations Make Ice Cream?” and answer comprehension questions.

This lesson plan is created for students at the Upper-Intermediate level, with the goal of broadening their vocabulary on the theme of indulging in small pleasures. It also increases their ease in using however, although, despite/in spite of.

Warm-up
The session kicks off with a fun game where students guess the word behind the associations.

Video
Students will watch a video named “How did ancient civilizations make ice cream?” Post-viewing, they will answer questions to check for comprehension.

Grammar
Focus here is on gaining proficiency in the use of however, although, despite/in spite of.

Exercises
In this part of the lesson, students complete sentences using however, although, despite/in spite of.

Reading
Students will read a short text discussing the benefits of ice cream, followed by a Q&A session.
