The boss factor: Why women prefer male leaders

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – Build workplace vocabulary including terms like “stereotype” and “disparage” through video comprehension activities in this business English lesson plan.
• – Master unreal time expressions using “wish,” “if only,” and “it’s (high) time” through grammar exercises for business English lessons.
• – Develop speaking and critical thinking by discussing workplace dynamics, exploring leadership preferences, and participating in conversation class lesson plans designed for ESL business English and adult English lessons.

In this Business English lesson plan, students will discuss reasons why women sometimes prefer male bosses and explore the root causes of this phenomenon according to research. They will also practice expressing unreal time.

Warm-up

The student discusses what they think is true about the workplace when women are in charge.

Video: Why women prefer male leaders

Before watching a video, the student learns new vocabulary which will help them understand the video better (stereotype, disparage, vying, etc.). After watching the video explaining why women prefer men in leadership roles, the student marks statements as true or false.

Grammar: Unreal time

The student learns and practices expressing unreal time using wish, if only, and it’s (high) time. 

The lesson ends with a wrap-up section.
