Prioritize Yourself

Lesson overview

In this Intermediate ESL lesson plan, students work through different exercises about self-care and personal priorities, learning vocabulary and grammar while discussing real situations like saying no to people, getting enough sleep, and making time for hobbies. Students practice collocations with “need”.

Warm-up

For each pair of options, students choose which one is more important to them when thinking about their personal needs and current life situation.

Video

Students watch a video titled “How to prioritize yourself — and why it’s so important.” After viewing, they complete a matching exercise connecting sentence beginnings with appropriate endings based on the video content.

Exercises

Language skills are reinforced through various activities. Students familiarize themselves with popular collocations with “need” and complete sentences with the correct collocation. In the second exercise they choose the correct form(s) of the verbs. In the following exercise they use verbs in the correct form to fill the gaps in sentences. Lastly, they rearrange letters to create verbs.

Reading

Students read a text about when people should prioritize themselves and answer questions about the text to test reading comprehension.

Discussion

Students analyze different aspects of prioritizing themselves and explain how they would approach them using the critical thinking terms provided.
