In this proficiency lesson plan, students will discuss the phenomenon of job hugging and why it’s become so prevalent in today’s economy.
Warm up:
The lesson starts with students identifying the workplace idioms in given sentences and explaining their meanings.
Video:
Students watch a video titled “Why So Many Americans Are Clinging To Their Jobs” and answer the questions that follow. This part of the lesson probes students’ listening skills and reinforces their ability to form and articulate conclusions.
Speaking:
This section opens with an exercise in which students match expressions to a workplace situation or create a scenario where such an expression might be used.
In the following exercise, the learners discuss the pros and cons of staying in the same job during economic uncertainty.

Next, the learners define words bolded in a set of sentences.
Finally, they define sayings and give examples of when they might be used.
Discussion:
Students read a list of famous quotes, choose one, and discuss it. They are asked to explain whether they agree with it or not and why.
