In this B2 ESL lesson, students explore why cybercrime has become so common while learning vocabulary for online threats, practicing idioms about risk and deception, and discussing how to stay safe online.
Warm-up:
Students share ideas about crime on the internet, from scams they have come across to the habits that help people stay safe online.
Reading:
Students read an article titled “Cybercrime-as-a-Service Explained: What You Need to Know.” They then explain why it is now so easy for almost anyone to become a cybercriminal.
Video:
Students watch a video titled “Hackers turn up heat in supermarket fridges and freezers in France.” After watching the video, they match sentence beginnings with the correct endings and use key phrases to discuss its main messages.
Exercises:
Students fill gaps with adjectives such as lucrative, vulnerable, and sophisticated. Next, they complete sentences with idioms such as sitting ducks and take the bait. Finally, they sort words into categories about cybercrime and explain their reasoning.
Speaking:
Students debate statements about who is responsible for cybercrime and answer questions about their own online habits. They then explain how they would react to real-life scenarios and role-play conversations between a victim of cybercrime and an expert.
Discussion:
Students discuss opinions about paying hackers, online privacy, smart home devices, and automatic payment blocking. Finally, they read a short text about why cybercrime keeps growing and decide which reason matters most.
