Hard Skills Get You Hired. Soft Skills Get You Promoted.

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – explore the difference between hard skills and soft skills through interactive exercises and categorization activities;
• – practice vocabulary building through synonym exercises, reading comprehension, and discussion skills;
• – watch a video about hard skills vs soft skills and develop critical thinking through Two Truths and a Lie games.

This B1 ESL lesson explores the difference between hard skills and soft skills through various interactive exercises including synonym practice, reading comprehension, and categorization activities.

Warm-Up

Students will come up with synonyms for the words in the text. This activity helps activate their vocabulary and get them thinking about the language they’ll use throughout the class.

Video

Students will watch a short video titled “Hard Skills vs Soft Skills.” After watching, students will answer comprehension questions to ensure they understand the main points and can discuss the topic.

Exercises

Students will sort skills into the correct categories. In the second exercise, students will play a game of Two Truths and a Lie.

Reading

Students will read a short passage focused on the importance of soft skills. After reading, they’ll answer questions that check for understanding and help them reflect on the topic in a personal way.

Discussion

At the end of the lesson, students will create a famous quote about skills from provided words and discuss it with the teacher.
