Do diets work?

Lesson overview

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

  • – expand vocabulary related to diets and eating habits while exploring different approaches to weight loss and nutrition;
  • – practice language skills through word identification games, synonym matching, gap-fill exercises, error correction, and reading comprehension abilities;
  • – watch a video about why counting calories is a ridiculous way to lose weight and discuss failed diet experiences through word cloud activities.

This Upper Intermediate lesson plan focuses on expanding vocabulary related to diets and eating habits.

Warm-up
We’ll kick things off with an engaging game where students will guess words connected to diets from the clues provided.

Video
We’ll watch a video called “Counting Calories Is A Ridiculous Way To Try And Lose Weight.” After the video, the students will be asked to fill in gaps in sentences.

Exercises
Here the students will have fun by finding diet-related words in a word table. They will also be tasked with matching synonyms to the words in the text.

In another exercise, they will fill in gaps in sentences from the provided list of words.

Finally, the students will look for mistakes in sentences.

Reading
The students will read a short blog post about a failed diet and discuss what went wrong.

Discussion
To finish up, there will be a discussion based on a word cloud related to diets.
