Avoiding manipulation

In this C1 ESL lesson, students will learn new vocabulary related to manipulation, persuasion tactics, and protecting yourself from undue influence.

Warm-up:

Students answer a few questions about the topic of the lesson.

Video:

Students watch a video titled “Former FBI Agent Explains How to Detect Lying & Deception.” After watching the video, they answer a few questions.

Exercises:

The students match the words with their synonyms in the text. After that, they fill gaps in sentences using words from a box. In the following three exercises, the learners match idioms, verbs or parts of sentences to the meaning or continuation of a sentence.

Reading:

Learners read a short text and answer questions about it.

Discussion:

The students discuss a number of questions about the topic of the lesson.
