In this Upper-Intermediate ESL lesson plan, the goal is to develop students’ driving-related vocabulary through interactive exercises.
Warm-up
The lesson kicks off with a light and engaging activity where students are given clues or associations related to a specific phrase. As each clue is revealed one by one, students try to guess the word.
Video
Next, students will watch a short video titled “5 Signs You’re a Good Driver.” The video introduces useful vocabulary in context and highlights positive driving habits. After watching, students will complete a gap-fill activity using key words from the video. This task checks for listening comprehension and helps reinforce the language used in the clip.
Exercises
This section includes a variety of vocabulary-focused activities. First, students will sort a list of phrases into the correct categories. In the second task, they’ll use words from a word bank to fill in the blanks in different sentences, helping to reinforce word usage and meaning. Finally, students will complete partially written phrases by filling in the missing letters to form common driving-related expressions. These exercises are designed to strengthen both vocabulary recall and spelling.
Reading
Students will read a short but informative text about road rage. The reading introduces additional vocabulary and provides real-life context to discuss emotional responses while driving. After reading, students will answer a series of questions to check understanding and spark further discussion.
Discussion
To wrap up, students will discuss a quote.
