Christmas Around the World

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

– develop A2-level vocabulary,

– enhance students’ speaking fluency,

– improve discussion skills.

This pre-intermediate speaking lesson explores how Christmas is celebrated differently around the world through interactive speaking activities.

Warm-up:

The lesson starts with students taking a Christmas quiz.

Video:

Students watch a music video called “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” Afterward, they discuss the key ideas from the video using helpful phrases.

Speaking Activities:

Students discuss Christmas traditions and how they can change. They then talk about how Christmas traditions can vary in different countries. In the following exercise, students discuss how they would respond in a set of predefined scenarios. Finally, they choose which of the opposing approaches to celebrating Christmas work best and why. 

Discussion:

The lesson concludes with students discussing Christmas traditions using a word cloud.
