The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are:

• – to practice vocabulary related to career development,
• – to increase the confidence with which students talk about workplace challenges,
• – to practice speaking at a C1 level.

This advanced lesson plan develops professional communication skills through activities focused on career development, workplace challenges, and strategic career planning.

Warm-up:

The lesson starts with students choosing a statement and responding to it using one of the provided phrases. 

Video:

Students watch a video titled “Looking for a job? Highlight your ability, not your experience.” and answer the questions that follow. This part of the lesson probes students’ listening skills and reinforces their ability to form and articulate conclusions. 

Speaking:

This section opens with an exercise in which students look at different situations and match them with a skill. They are asked to explain their answers.

In the following exercise, the learners discuss the pros and cons of pursuing additional professional certifications and qualifications.

In the third exercise, students suggest solutions to challenges using a list of provided phrases.

Next, the learners define bold words in a set of sentences.

Finally, they define sayings and give examples of when they might be used. 

Discussion:

Students read a list of famous quotes, choose one, and discuss it. They are asked to explain whether they agree with it or not and why.
