From Nightclubs to Netflix: Why Young People Stay Home

Lesson overview

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are:

  • – to practice vocabulary related to social interactions,
  • – to increase the confidence with which students talk about personal choices,
  • – to practice speaking at a B2 level.

This upper-intermediate lesson plan explores the trend of young people increasingly choosing to stay home instead of socializing, examining both the causes and consequences of this shift in social behavior.

Warm-up:

The lesson starts with students choosing a statement and responding to it using one of the provided phrases.

Video:

Students watch a video titled “People Are Partying Less. Here’s Why That’s Worrying.” and answer the questions that follow. This part of the lesson probes students’ listening skills and reinforces their ability to form and articulate conclusions.

Speaking:

This section opens with an exercise in which students look at different situations and match them with a skill. They are asked to explain their answers.

In the following exercise, the learners discuss the pros and cons of young people choosing to stay home instead of going out to socialize.

In the third exercise, students suggest solutions to challenges using a list of provided collocations.

Next, the learners define bold words in a set of sentences.

Finally, they define sayings and give examples of when they might be used.

Discussion:

Students read a list of famous quotes, choose one, and discuss it. They are asked to explain whether they agree with it or not and why.
