Should We Have Opinions?

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – learn advanced language for discussing opinion-forming and practice applying this knowledge to real-world situations;
• – practice advanced language skills through idiom completion, sentence transformation, collocation exercises, and reading comprehension activities;
• – watch a video about that one friend who makes everything awkward and engage in thought-provoking discussions about opinion formation.

In this C2 level lesson plan, students will learn advanced language for discussing opinion-forming and practice applying this knowledge to real-world situations.

Warm-up 

Students analyze a complex situation and discuss what they would do when faced with such a scenario.

Video 

Students watch an informative video titled “That One Friend Who Makes Everything Awkward.” After viewing, they complete a matching exercise connecting sentence beginnings with appropriate endings based on the video content.

Exercises 

Language skills are reinforced through various activities. Students complete the gaps in sentences with correct forms of words to create idioms. In the second exercise, they complete sentences so that they have a similar meaning to the original sentences. Lastly, they use words provided to complete the collocations.

Reading 

Students read a text about the risks of having opinions on every subject and answer questions about the text to test reading comprehension.

Discussion 

Students discuss several thought-provoking questions on the subject matter.
