Can politicians keep their promises?

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

• – analyze political discourse and campaign promises through advanced rhetorical analysis and persuasive language examination;
• – practice advanced language skills through synonym identification, word replacement exercises, error correction, and reading comprehension activities;
• – watch a video about whether Trump can actually control inflation and engage in critical discussions about political motivations and campaign rhetoric.

In this Proficiency ESL lesson plan, students will analyze political discourse and campaign promises through advanced rhetorical analysis and persuasive language.

Warm-up: 

Students will look at statements and guess which ones are true.

Video: 

Students watch a video titled “Can Trump Alone Actually Control Inflation?” and fill gaps in a text based on the video.

Exercises: 

Students will be tasked with coming up with synonyms for the words in a text. In the second exercise, they will be asked to replace the parts of the sentences with words from a box. Finally, students cross out an incorrect word in sentences.

Reading: 

Students read a short text about why some people strive to become politicians and answer comprehension questions.

Discussion: 

Students reorganize the words to create a quote about politics and discuss it with the teacher.
