Exactly where are we now?

Lesson overview

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

  • – Build travel and border vocabulary through matching exercises and exploring terms related to international boundaries and climate change effects in this C2 lesson plan.
  • – Master discourse markers and practice using them properly to improve writing and speaking fluency in advanced conversations.
  • – Improve comprehension and discussion skills by watching videos about melting borders between Italy and Switzerland, reading articles about border changes, and exploring how geography affects communities.

In this C2 lesson plan, students will practice vocabulary about travel and international borders. They will watch a video and read an article about the subject. We will go over discourse markers and how to use them properly.

Warm-up

The lesson starts with a discussion about travel and international borders.

Video: The Italy-Switzerland border is melting

Before watching a video, the student is introduced to new vocabulary through a matching exercise. They will practice using the new words and matching some of them. They will watch the video, which discusses how current solutions don’t seem to work, and then discuss questions based on the video.

Discourse markers

The student will get familiar with discourse markers and practice using them properly.

Reading for understanding:

The student will read an article about other borders where this could be happening and how it will affect the people who live there.

Review

The student reviews the vocabulary and grammar by completing sentences and answering wrap-up questions.
