What will life be like for those born today?

Lesson overview

The main goals of this ESL lesson plan are to:

  • – Explore future cities vocabulary including terms like “integral,” “backbone,” and “seamless” while discussing concepts like renewables and efficiency through word cloud activities and video comprehension exercises.
  • – Compare Future Perfect Simple and Future Perfect Continuous by learning structural differences and practicing both tenses through sentence completion activities in this upper intermediate lesson.
  • – Make future predictions by watching videos about life in 2050, discussing urban development possibilities, and using both future perfect forms to talk about expected changes in city living.

In this Upper-Intermediate lesson plan, the students will discuss the future of cities, as well as how to form and use Future Perfect Simple and Future Perfect Continuous.

Warm-up

The student reads the words in the word cloud and tries to guess what topic they are connected with (community, renewables, efficiency, etc.).

Video: Your life in the city in 2050

Prior to watching a video, the student matches new words with their meanings (integral, backbone, seamless, etc.) and uses them to complete the given sentences.

The student watches the video Your life in the city in 2050 and answers the video-related questions.

Grammar: Future Perfect Simple vs. Future Perfect Continuous

The student contrasts the structure and use of Future Perfect Simple and Future Perfect Continuous. They complete sentences related to the future of cities using these two future forms.

Finally, they practice using these two forms in speaking by answering questions about future predictions.
