Climate Change in Action

In this C1 ESL lesson, students explore climate change through vocabulary, a reading about Europe’s record wildfires, listening, and real-life discussions.

Warm-up:

Students are presented with pairs of statements, choose the one they agree with more, and explain the choice to their teacher. In the second part, the learners are introduced to a scenario in which they must decide how they will act.

Video:

Students watch a video titled “Record heat waves fuel wildfires and extreme drought in Europe.” After watching the video, they answer a few questions.

Exercises:

The students match terms with their definitions. After that, they choose the words that best complete a set of sentences. In the third section, the learners rearrange the letters to create verbs. After that, they design a town of the future using provided prompts. In the fifth exercise, the students decide how best to allocate resources in order to protect a city from the effects of climate change. In the last part, they read a few scenarios and decide what they would do when faced with them.

Reading:

Learners read a short text and then answer a few questions about it.

Discussion:

The students discuss where they stand on the issue of climate change.
